Malta, one of the most calming island settings worldwide, offers visitors much more than a beach and a view. I found the brilliant blue waters and rocky coastline to be a speck of dust compared to all that can be enjoyed on a Maltese vacation.

1. Time – If you want time to read a book, take a walk, have a meaningful conversation, or just catnap on the beach, Malta is the place to do it. This European island destination offers leisurely travelers a reprieve from the usual hustle of mainland life. Everything is just a little slower in Malta and tourists looking for a place to go offline for a few days find this colorful haven to be an excellent fit.

2. Vitamin D – With about 3,000 hours of light from the sun per year and mild weather patterns, Malta is one of the sunniest spots in all of Europe. Combine that with the longer days and visitors are sure to get plenty of the “sunshine vitamin.” Vitamin D, naturally awakened in skin by sunlight, is a known contributor to reducing many ailments including depression, allergies, and bone degeneration. I personally noticed improved attitude and perspective, in addition to tan lines, when visiting Malta.

3. Land & Sea – Take a daytrip to the fishermen’s paradise village of Marsaxlokk for some relaxing downtime on a private rented boat or group tour cruising along the dramatic coast. My sailing husband appreciated the Regatta’s in nearby Isla. If you’re more of a landlubber, but still craving seafood, visit Marsaxlokk’s Sunday market for some fresh catches like tuna, red mullet, and seasonal prawns. Or, try a scenic bus tour for picturesque views of the Maltese landscape and a peak into daily village life with many stops for shopping and eating along the way.

4. Quiet – Noise pollution is not a common problem on Malta. Aside from the occasional carpentry work or ambulance, city folk are in for some real peace and quiet. Getting away from the usual drum and buzz of life is like taking your ears to the spa, and I wish I could have stayed just a little longer.

5. Rural Culture – Quaint and rustic, the towns of Malta offer a different slant on living than most visitors are used to. Be sure to try some pastizzi, figolli (only in Easter!), or bigilla at any local eatery for bite after bite of taste-bud heaven! Families with young children seem to enjoy the petite sized nostalgic attraction of Popeye Village — a place where kids can play in safe grounds and waters for an hour or two. For some insight into the traditional Maltese heritage, visit the Craft Village in Ta’ Qali where I saw many live artisans and perhaps you may have the opportunity to make a hand-blown glass object like I did!

With several historical and modern towns to choose from, a vacation in Malta satisfied my need for repose, but still had just the right amount of unusual activities to steer away from boredom.
