In 2013, Heys heavily promoted the Portal Smart Luggage in the Toronto subway system. It caught my attention because the luggage had two different zipper sets (or compartments) for easier access. The retail price of the 30” Hey Portal Smart Luggage was about 400 CAD in 2013. I bought it on sale online for 200 CAD. Below I offer my Heys luggage review.
I despise going through a full luggage set just to get one piece; the two compartments make organizing my clothes and photography equipment (but not the camera) easier.
The luggage has lots of space for belongings, more than I actually need. It comes with an attached, TSA lock for the main zippers and an external TSA lock for the secondary zipper set.
The secondary zippers tore twice in different locations. Heys repaired the damage, but I was stuck with shipping fees to them. They covered the return shipping fee.
I asked Heys to change my luggage to a different model, but that wasn’t an option they offered. I can’t trust using the secondary zipper when I travel. There is a good chance I will lose my belongings or will have to buy another piece of luggage while traveling.
This product isn’t horrible. It has lots of space, comes with an attached TSA lock, and is stylish. The warranty in Canada is 10 years. If Heys improved the secondary zipper set and the internal compartment divider (which is flimsy), then this luggage piece would be exceptional. This Heys luggage review would have been five stars. Another option is to use the secondary zipper set sparingly.
This is a good product, but not a great one.
