The best travel insurance for Canadians I found was World Nomads. I  heard about it because it was recommended by the travel blogging community.

The reason I chose Worlds Nomads is because it has a comprehensive package for a decent price. World Nomads Travel Insurance for Canadians covers emergency medical, trip interruption, trip cancellation, luggage & personal effects, and more.

I paid 441 CAD (including tax) for six months of travel insurance. I was only able to buy a maximum of six months. I spoke with a World Nomads rep and he informed me I can extend the coverage for an additional six months online. Update: I extended the policy online for an additional 5 months.

Before you buy travel insurance, make sure to check if your credit card or employer-sponsored health insurance covers at least travel emergency medical, if applicable. Sometimes, you can use loyalty points to buy travel insurance. If you have to purchase a plan, then World Nomads is the best travel insurance for Canadians.

As a Canadian, you will need to know that World Nomads does not cover Cuba. They also ask if you are covered under a provincial health plan; in my case it would be Ontario Health Insurance Plan. Similar to many policies, pre-existing conditions are not covered under travel emergency medical insurance.

After a certain amount of time outside Canada, provincial and territorial health plans 1. Require you to take a medical assessment upon return to Canada, 2. Or cease. You may be eligible for an extension on the length of time you can be outside of Canada.

If I ever need to make a claim through World Nomads, I will update this post.

In order to fund my travels, I earn a small commission on World Nomads sales through my links. I wouldn’t recommend this product if I didn’t use it myself or their service was unacceptable.
