January is a notoriously rubbish time of year. The weather is worrisome, you’ve given up chocolate and it’s dark by the time you get to your desk. Falling into fantasies of far flung beaches is entirely appropriate. Whether you’re planning a beach break to push through the tedium of winter, or just dreaming about sun, sea and sand, here are five beaches to banish the winter blues.
1. Maya Bay, Thailand
Maya Bay was catapulted to superstardom after featuring in the Hollywood epic The Beach staring a sun kissed Leonardo DiCaprio. Each year, thousands of travellers descend on these hallowed shores but don’t let that put you off. Flanked by 100 metre high cliffs, this getaway still offers secluded space, and overnight camping opportunities.
2.Te Henga (Bethells Beach), New Zealand
With dominating cliffs, butter blonde sand dunes, irresistible fauna, wild waters and a beach stretching far as the eye can see, Te Henga, as it was originally known by Maori settlers is a striking, safe haven, and one of Auckland’s best kept secrets renowned for its black sand.
3. Whitehaven Beach, Whitsunday Islands, Australia
For a true, natural phenomenon, Whitehaven Beach is one of Australia’s best. The well maintained, powdery sands give epic views of the spectacularly coloured waters.
4. Baia do Sancho, Brasil
With its blessed beaches matching its native bevy of beauties, there is no way Brasil wouldn’t make the list. Pristine waters and lush tropics make this beach a must see.
5. Playa de ses Illetes, Formentera
For a true taste of paradise, Playa de ses Illetes can’t be beaten in terms of its clean, cool, baby blue waters. No this image has not been photoshopped; this is heaven on earth!
