I went on a walking tour on February 9 at 2:30 p.m. and learned a few facts about Medellin. I missed the tour last year and did not want to miss it again. I met Juliana, our tour guide, at the metro station. The tour was operated by Real City Tours and they work on a tip basis. I learned a semester’s worth of Medellin history – the good, the bad, and the ugly. I felt Juliana’s emotions as she emphasized some of Medellin’s tragic events.
Here Are 5 Facts About Medellin and Colombia I learned.
1. Bandeja Paisa is a national dish of Colombia. The dish is usually made of rice, fried egg, plantain, avocado, arepa, refried beans, ground beef, sausage, and some.

2. Lots of prostitution, drug consumption, and intoxication occur around churches. “Sin and pray – and you’re okay.”
3. People believed Medellin could not build a train system 20 years ago due to the drug and corruption problem. The Metro is now loved by Paisas and has a Mr. Clean appeal to it.
4. Drug money did not build Medellin. Medellin built Medellin and continues to do so.
5. “Don’t give papaya,” Juliana said. It’s a Colombian expression meaning it’s your fault if you get robbed. Don’t show-off your valuables.
Juliana provided Medellin history going back to the 1800’s. Most of which I can’t retell with 100% accuracy. So bring your notebook if you go on the walking tour.
